I.M. Kolthoff Prize
Every two years, the Analytical Chemistry Section (SAC) awards the I.M. Kolthoff Prize to a researcher who has produced a high-quality dissertation in the field of analytical chemistry. The prize, which is funded by the KNCV Board and the SAC, consists of a certificate and a cash award of €2,000.
I.M. Kolthoff
Izaak Maurits Kolthoff, born in Almelo in 1894, was a lecturer at Utrecht University (1918–1927) and subsequently a professor at the University of Minnesota (USA) until his retirement. Professor Kolthoff provided chemical analysis with a solid scientific foundation and is therefore regarded as the “Father of Analytical Chemistry.” Under the influence of his research, the “analytical sciences” developed into a major branch of modern chemistry.
Candidates
Eligible for the I.M. Kolthoff Prize are recently promoted researchers of all nationalities who, in the past two years, have defended a dissertation with a clear analytical chemistry component at a Dutch university. The research may have been conducted in an academic, industrial, and/or institutional setting.
Selection Committee
The I.M. Kolthoff Prize is awarded based on the recommendation of a three-member jury appointed by the SAC Board. Candidates and their work are evaluated according to criteria such as demonstrated competence in analytical chemistry research, scientific originality, quality, productivity, and insight into the field and its challenges.
